In case you missed it, last week we discussed the major changes to the CBK — including new competency areas and what’s coming in 2026. You can read that post here.

For trainers and professional development providers, the revised CBK is a powerful tool to:

Inform course goals and learning objectives

Ensure your professional development offerings meet updated state standards

Support educators pursuing credentials and continuing education

The New Core Body of Knowledge: Building a Shared Foundation for Early Childhood Educators

All children deserve nurturing, qualified, and skilled adults to care for and teach them. To build a strong early childhood teaching workforce in New York, we need a shared understanding of what early childhood educators must know and be able to do.

The New York State Core Body of Knowledge (CBK) outlines the essential knowledge, and skills educators need to support children's development and learning from birth through age 8. For trainers and training providers, the CBK offers a critical foundation to design professional development experiences that are aligned with a unified vision of excellence across diverse early childhood settings.

Having a single, shared set of professional standards unifies the workforce across settings like Family Child Care, Head Start, Pre-K, and religious-based programs, strengthening the entire early childhood field.

Coming up next week: We’ll explore the major changes in the 2024 revision and what they mean for your work as a trainer.

For a full overview, visit the Institute’s blog post: A New CBK Is On the Way.
